The Twins are a pair of Hardmode bosses fought simultaneously. They are two separate entities, Retinazer and Spazmatism, which attack together and must both be defeated to win the fight. Defeating them unlocks an array of new content, including the Solar Eclipse.

Spawn

The Twins can be summoned manually using a Mechanical Eye at night in any biome. They also have a 10% chance to spawn randomly at dusk once a Demon or Crimson Altar has been destroyed, as long as they have not been defeated in the current world. Their arrival is announced by the status message: "This is going to be a terrible night..."

The Twins spawn in on either side of the player from above and begin attacking. They perform attacks from the following set:

Hovering Fire

  • The Twins hover by the sides of the player and fire at them.
  • Spazmatism shoots out a spread of 4 Cursed Fireballs while Retinazer fires a single Flame Laser at the player.

Charge

  • The Twins align with the player and simultaneously charge at them, effectively swapping positions.

Spin

  • The Twins orbit around the player in a perfectly circular path, simultaneously firing at them.
  • Retinazer fires a Flame Laser while Spazmatism fires a Cursed Fireball in intervals.
  • The spin lasts for 4 seconds, after which the Twins directly charge at the player, repositioning themselves.

Flamethrower and Beam Burst

  • Retinazer stays in place and charges up a beam to fire at the player, telegraphed by a glowing red line.
  • Spazmatism charges at the player, firing a Cursed Flamethrower at them.
  • Retinazer fires its beam at the player in short intervals, along with a burst of 5 Flame Lasers.
  • The attack ends after Spazmatism charges at the player 3 times, and Retinazer fires its beam 5 times.

Switching Rams

  • Each of the Twins individually aligns with the player horizontally and charges at them.
  • After one eye charges, it flies upwards and the other eye begins charging in the opposite direction.
  • This attack lasts for 6 seconds.

After an eye reaches 75% (22,462) health, it spins around, losing its organic components and revealing its robotic form. If one eye reaches its second form while the other eye is still in its first, it will become temporarily invulnerable till both eyes reach below 75% health. As long as one eye is still in its first form, both eyes will continue attacking as if they were in Phase 1.

The first phase cycles through the following attack pattern:

  • Hovering Fire
  • Charge x2
  • Spin
  • Flamethrower and Beam Burst
  • Switching Rams
  • Spin
  • Hovering Fire
  • Charge x2
  • Switching Rams
  • Flamethrower and Beam Burst

Once both eyes reach 75% health, the second phase begins. The boss gains several buffs to its current set of attacks, as well as a new synchronized attack. It performs attacks from the following pool:

Chaotic Fire and Downward Beam

  • The Twins hover above the player, Retinazer pointing directly downwards and Spazmatism spinning wildly.
  • After a moment, Spazmatism vomits out a radial spread of accelerated Cursed Fireballs in every direction.
    • The Cursed Fireballs dissipate on impact with any solid block.
  • Simultaneously, Retinazer fires a massive beam downwards which leaves a visible fiery impact on the ground and releases several Red Lasers in a radial formation from the point of contact.
  • This attack is repeated thrice before moving on to the next one.

Once one eye reaches 5% (1,498) health, it gains a shield, making it invulnerable to damage. The player must destroy the other eye to continue the fight. If Spazmatism gains a shield, a message pops up in the chat "SPA-MK4: DEFENSES PENETRATED. INITIATING PROCEDURE FFLD-17ECF9". If Retinazer gains its shield, then the message which pops up in the chat reads "RET-MK7: DEFENSES PENETRATED. INITIATING PROCEDURE FFLD-17ECF9." instead.

The second phase cycles through the following attack pattern:

  • Hovering Fire
  • Charge x2
  • Chaotic Fire and Downward Beam
  • Flamethrower and Beam Burst
  • Switching Rams
  • Spin
  • Chaotic Fire and Downward Beam
  • Charge x2

If Spazmatism is defeated in Phase 2, it violently ruptures before exploding. Retinazer's shield bursts, releasing a shockwave, and the eye starts glowing brightly, gaining several new and powerful attacks. Retinazer regenerates 25% (7,487) health and becomes vulnerable again as the message "RET-MK7: ERROR DETECTING SECOND UNIT. BURNING EXCESS FUEL RESERVES." appears in the chat.

It performs the following attacks in succession:

Swift Laserbursts

  • Retinazer moves clockwise between the top-right, bottom-right, bottom-left, and top-left areas relative to the player and fires quick barrages of Flame Lasers directly at them.
  • Simultaneously, 4 Flame Lasers will converge in on the player from the horizontal and vertical sides of the player.
  • After firing 6 barrages of Flame Lasers, Retinazer moves on to the next attack.

Aimed Laser Beam

  • Retinazer aims at the player, firing out single Flame Lasers while simultaneously charging up a massive predictive Laser Beam telegraphed by a glowing red line.
  • After a few moments, it fires the Laser Beam which then dissipates into perpendicular lines of Flame Lasers in either direction.
    • The Laser Beam will temporarily make the sky brighter as it is fired.
  • This attack is repeated twice before moving on to the next one.
    • The first Laser Beam fired has a longer warm-up time compared to the second attack cycle to give the player more time to react and avoid unfair hits.

Agile Beam Charges

  • Retinazer start charging up a Laser Beam while loosely aiming for the player, glowing orange as it does so.
  • It then fires the Laser Beam, charging in an arc along its path while also releasing 3 hexagonal bursts of Flame Lasers in its wake.
  • After 5 charges, Retinazer moves on to the next attack.

If Retinazer is defeated in Phase 2, it violently ruptures before exploding. Spazmatism's shield bursts, releasing a shockwave, and the eye starts brightly glowing a pale green, gaining several new and powerful attacks. Spazmatism regenerates 25% (7,487) health and becomes vulnerable again as the message "SPA-MK4: ERROR DETECTING SECOND UNIT. BURNING EXCESS FUEL RESERVES." appears in the chat.

Throughout this phase, 2 green flames will be intermittently released at the player from the sides of the screen. They will be telegraphed by a green line.

It performs the following attacks in succession:

Radial Fire Charges

  • Spazmatism hovers above the player and performs a decelerated charge at them.
  • As it reaches the end of the charge, it releases a radial burst of 9 green flames.
  • This attack is repeated 3 times before moving on to the next one.

Hellfire Vomit

  • Spamzatism hovers near the player and vomits out 2 waves of 4 green flames at the player.
  • The green flames vomited out by Spazmatism weakly curve and home in on the player's general position.

Flamethrowing Spin

  • Spazmatism violently spins around, releasing a massive arc of Cursed Flames from its mouth while charging at the player.
  • It also releases a radial spread of 12 Cursed Cinders along its path.
  • This attack lasts for 6 seconds before Spazmatism moves on to the next one.
