Crabulon is a Pre-Hardmode boss. While not required for progression, defeating Crabulon provides the player with money and useful items such as the Mushroom Plasma Root, and serves as a decent method of farming Glowing Mushrooms.

Spawn

Crabulon does not spawn on its own, and requires the player to summon it with the Decapodita Sprout in a Glowing Mushroom biome.

When summoned, Crabulon initially remains idle and deals no damage, but it will start its normal behavior after 3.5 seconds or when attacked.

In its first phase, Crabulon alternates between two attacks:

Walk

  • Crabulon walks towards the player, attempting to deal contact damage. Its walking speed increases slightly as it loses health.

Jump

  • Crabulon comes to a stop, briefly lifts its arm, and jumps towards the player. The height and length of the jump scale with how far away the player is.
  • Every third jump, upon landing, Crabulon fires a large ring of Spore Gas at random velocities. Spore Gas projectiles slowly decelerate, deal no damage for the first 2 seconds of their lives, and dissipate after 12 seconds.

Crabulon enters its second phase at 85% (9,010) health. In this phase, Crabulon can stop and fire a short burst of Crab Shrooms while walking, and Jump releases Crab Shrooms upward upon landing.

Crabulon also gains one new attack in this phase:

Mushroom Columns

  • Crabulon stops for a moment and summons small mushroom stalks regularly spaced along solid tiles on the player's level, which project blue telegraph lines above them. The angle and height of the lines is slightly randomized, and their height also scales with how far the player is above the boss.
  • After 1.25 seconds, the lines fade out, and the stalks rapidly grow into stationary Mushroom Columns which match the lines' dimensions. Mushroom Columns fade out after 4 seconds. These columns deal contact damage.
  • Crabulon releases 3 Crab Shrooms upward when the attack starts. Crab Shrooms float slowly downward and chase the player horizontally.
  • Crabulon moves slightly slower while Mushroom Columns are active.

Walk

  • Crabulon walks towards the player. Its walking speed increases slightly as it loses health.
  • Crabulon stops in the middle of the walking and fires a quick volley of 5 gravity-affected Spores at the player, with each Spore in the volley traveling slightly further than the last. Spores die in a cloud of dust when they strike a tile.

Jump

  • Crabulon comes to a stop, briefly lifts its arm, and jumps towards the player. The height and length of the jump scale with how far away the player is.
  • Upon landing, Crabulon releases Crab Shrooms upward, unless more than 10 Crab Shrooms are already alive.
  • Every third jump, upon landing, Crabulon fires a large ring of Spore Gas at random velocities. Spore Gas projectiles slowly decelerate, deal no damage for the first 2 seconds of their lives, and dissipate after 12 seconds.

The second phase cycles through the following attack pattern:

  • Walk
  • Jump
  • Walk
  • Mushroom Columns
  • Jump

Crabulon enters its third phase at 45% (4,770) health. In this phase, Jump can no longer fire Spore Gas or Crab Shrooms.

Crabulon also gains one new attack in this phase:

Claw Slam

  • Crabulon separates its arms from its body, attached by large blue muscles, and attempts to hold a position close to the player for about 1.5 seconds.
  • The arms stretch out from the body and lift upward, Crabulon halts for about 2 seconds, and the arms slam down, creating a large cloud of blue dust.
  • On impact, each arm fires gravity-affected Spores in a large upward spread which is angled slightly downward towards Crabulon.
    • The velocity of the Spores is increased if the player is at least 25 tiles above the boss.
  • This attack always occurs three times in a row.

  • Crabulon stops in the middle of walking and fires a quick volley of 5 gravity-affected Spores at the player, with each Spore in the volley traveling slightly further than the last. Spores die in a cloud of dust when they strike a tile.

Jump

  • Crabulon comes to a stop, briefly lifts its arm, and jumps towards the player. The height and length of the jump scale with how far away the player is.

The third phase cycles through the following attack pattern:

  • Walk
  • Jump
  • Claw Slam
  • Walk
  • Mushroom Columns
  • Jump
  • Claw Slam
