The Aquatic Scourge is a boss that can be fought in the Sulphurous Sea biome at any point in the game, but is intended to be fought in early Hardmode.

Spawn

The Aquatic Scourge does not spawn on its own, and requires the player to summon it by using the Seafood in the Sulphurous Sea.

Behavior

Unique throughout the first and second phases, the Aquatic Scourge must be fought while underwater, while helpful blue water bubbles assist the player in preventing poison build up. It will enrage and turn invincible if the player goes above the surface of the water during these phases. The boss also releases acid during certain attacks which accelerates the poison meter upon contact.

When summoned, the Aquatic Scourge uses a unique spawn animation.

  • A blue water bubble summons below the player as the camera briefly pans towards it, inform its usage for the player.
  • Moments after the bubble passes through the player, sulphuric water below the player will bubble for about 3 seconds, during which the Scourge remains directly below the player with its map icon hidden.
  • Once this time has passed, the Scourge lunges upward from behind the player. It turns to hover near the player for a moment once past them, then roars and begins attacking.

At 67% (98,624) health, the Aquatic Scourge stops moving for a second and roars, releasing a massive visual gamma pulse. It transitions into its second phase, gaining buffs to its current set of attacks. It can now molt its spikes and shoot them at the player. It performs attacks from the following pool in Phase 2:

Spike Molt

  • The Aquatic Scourge slows down for a moment and roars, then releases half its spikes off its body.
  • The spikes home in on the player after a brief pause.
  • The Aquatic Scourge shudders every time it fires the spikes, releasing pools of blood.
    • The attack itself damages the Aquatic Scourge for 0.75% (1,104) health.
  • It is performed twice, leaving the Aquatic Scourge's body bare. It then slowly grows back its spikes.

Radiation Pulse

  • The Aquatic Scourge moves towards the player, periodically firing out a spread of 4 Acid Globs at them.
    • It also releases a purely visual green radiation pulse from its head every second spread.
  • The Acid Globs are fired every 1 second.
  • This attack is performed for 8 seconds.
    • A helpful blue water bubble appears from below the player every 3 seconds.

Rubble Charges

The Aquatic Scourge transitions into its final phase at 25% (36,800) health. At the beginning of the phase, the Sulphurous Sea's acidity exponentially increases as the Aquatic Scourge swims to the surface, forcing the player to follow as well while a storm rages in the background.

The boss cycles through the following attacks consecutively:

Radioactive Breath

  • The Aquatic Scourge keeps moving towards the player, making sharp turns and firing a spew of toxic acid from its mouth.
  • This attack lasts for 9 seconds.

Acid Rain

  • The Aquatic Scourge lunges upwards from below the player, vomiting out 3 spreads of 20 gravity-affected Acid Globs.
  • It also causes toxic bubbles to rise up from the Sulphurous Sea directly below the player every 0.75 seconds.
  • This attack is performed twice.

Sulphurous Typhoon

  • The Aquatic Scourge spins around rapidly, creating a Sulphurous Typhoon that moves towards the player.
    • The position of the Sulphurous Typhoon is telegraphed by a large column of bubbles rising from the Sulphurous Sea.
  • The Sulphurous Typhoon spits out a large amount of gravity-affected Acid Globs every moment.
  • The Aquatic Scourge rotates about the Sulphurous Typhoon, vomiting out toxic bubbles at the player every 0.5 seconds.

The following occurs after the Aquatic Scourge's health has been depleted:

Dying Breath (Death Animation)

  • Upon reaching 0% health, the Aquatic Scourge moves towards the player, coughing out blood and chunks of viscera.
  • On its fourth and final cough, the Aquatic Scourge collapses, vomiting out its drops.
  • Its corpse then limply falls downwards and begins dissolving in the acidic environment.
    • If its corpse falls into the Sulphurous Sea, various tiny fish can be seen eating its flesh.
